US chuch’s “gay nativity scene” vandalised on Christmas Day 11
9:22 AM — A nativity scene featuring gay, lesbian and straight couples outside a church in California was reportedly vandalised on Christmas Day. Claremont United Methodist Church had erected a large set of silhouettes around a lit tree sculpture. The silhouettes featured one gay, one lesbian and one straight couple.

US census shows 131,297 gay marriages 7
4:12 PM — The US census shows that there are 131,297 gay married households and 514,735 unmarried gay households. Marriage equality campaigners said the figures show the need for gay couples to be given the right to wed.

Irish civil partnerships come into law 27
11:39 AM — Ireland's civil partnership law came into force at the weekend, although gay couples must wait until early April to hold their ceremonies. The law was welcomed by the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network as a "new dawn" for gay and lesbian couples but other groups said it was not good enough.

Australian MPs to canvass voters on gay marriage 4
12:02 PM — Australian politicians will ask voters whether gay marriage should be legalised after the Green Party won a motion on the issue. A recent poll commissioned by gay groups found 62 per cent of respondents in favour of the change.

3:27 PM — Two lawsuits have been filed against the US Defence of Marriage Act, which bars federal recognition of gay marriage. Couples and bereaved spouses in New York, Connecticut, Vermont and New Hampshire will challenge the law.

Isle of Man to consider civil partnerships for gay couples 8
5:52 PM — The Isle of Man's House of Keys will debate whether to introduce civil partnerships for gay couples on the island. The Civil Partnerships Bill will have its first reading tomorrow and, if passed into law, will give gay and lesbian couples the same rights afforded to straight married couples.

Happy fourth anniversary for civil partnerships 40
10:35 AM — Today marks the fourth anniversary of civil partnerships in England and Wales. Although Scotland celebrated its first civil partnership on December 20th 2005 due to a misunderstanding over the date, today marks the fourth anniversary for gay couples in England and Wales.

10:47 AM — An Islington registrar who refused to carry out civil partnerships for gay couples has lost her appeal. The Court of Appeal ruled today that Lillian Ladele had not been discriminated against.
