    5:48 PM — The Maryland Senate last night gave preliminary approval for a gay marriage bill in the state, 25 votes to 22. The Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act will remove gender references in the US state’s marriage laws and give churches the right not to conduct ceremonies.

    Hawaii Senate votes for gay civil unions, governor to sign bill 2

    Hawaii joins other states with civil unions

    12:56 AM — Politicians in the state of Hawaii have passed bill legalising civil unions for same-sex couples late last night, with the Senate voting 18-5 in favour. The bill has been passed to Democratic Governor Neil Abercrombie to sign into law, he has already signaled that he supports the measure.
