US: Most Utah voters back legal recognition for gay couples – but not marriage 7
11:55 PM — Polling shows that 71 per cent of Utah voters support some form of legal recognition for gay couples. The survey, by Brigham Young University, found that 43 per cent of respondents thought civil unions should be legal, while 28 per cent wanted full marriage equality.

2:40 AM — Voters in North Carolina have approved Amendment One, which introduces a constitutional ban on gay marriages and outlaws even civil unions. The amendment reads: “Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.”

5:42 PM — A bill to allow same-sex couples to form civil unions in Colorado is expected to move forward following months of stalling in the Colorado legislature. The bill to give gay couples almost identical rights to straight married couples is expected to pass in the Democratic controlled Senate because a similar bill passed comfortably there last year by 23 to 12 votes.

5:41 PM — A Gallup poll has found that 53 per cent of American respondents support giving gay couples the right to marry. This is the first time a Gallup poll has found a majority in favour of marriage equality.
Rhode Island House approves civil unions 17
11:22 AM — The Rhode Island House approved a civil unions bill yesterday. The measure will now go to the Senate, where it is expected to receive broad support. However, some gay rights activists are furious that a gay marriage bill was scrapped in favour of what they see as watered-down legislation.

Delaware governor signs civil unions into law 8
3:12 PM — The governor of the US state of Delaware has signed a civil unions bill into law. As he signed the bill yesterday, Governor Jack Markell told gay couples in a 500-strong audience: "Your family is now equal under the law."
