Corinne Cestino and Sophie Hasslauer, who have lived together for 15 years and have four children, asked for the right to marry but were turned down by the Constitutional Council.

    11:56 AM — Gay couples living in Ireland who have married or had a civil partnership abroad will be recognised as civil partners from today. The change is part of Ireland's new civil partnership laws, which give gay couples almost all the rights of marriage.

    11:05 AM — A lesbian couple were turned away from a registry office yesterday when they tried to apply to marry. Colette French and Katie Green, both 21, were turned away from Petersfield Register Office in Hampshire and refused a letter of rejection, which is usually given to couples denied a marriage.

    3:52 PM — A straight couple who were barred from having a civil partnership say they will fight the ban in court. Ian Goggin and Kristin Skarsholt, of Bristol, said they were disappointed to have been rejected by Bristol register office because they are straight but hope that their attempt would help change the law.

    11:18 AM — A heterosexual couple from Bristol will attempt to get a civil partnership tomorrow morning. Ian Goggin and Kristin Skarsholt say the ban on straight civil partnerships is "unjust, discriminatory and offensive".

    2:01 PM — Gay rights charity Stonewall has launched its own version of the US It Gets Better YouTube campaign for bullied gay teenagers. 'It Gets Better Today' tells young people that they do not have to wait for their lives to improve because the UK already has civil partnerships, out gay soldiers and parental rights for gay people.

    11:18 AM — Iceland's openly gay Prime Minister, Johanna Sigurdardottir, has officially married her long-term partner, Jonina Leosdottir. Legislation that allows gay couples to marry came into force yesterday, 27 June, following a unanimous decision adopted by Icelandic parliament on 12 June.
