Unitarian church disappointed by ‘discriminatory’ gay marriage plans 33
5:13 PM — The chief officer of the British Unitarian Church says he is disappointed by the announcement of a government consultation on gay marriage. Derek McAuley said it would be discriminatory not to allow religious gay marriages and questioned why the process could not begin before Christmas, rather than the scheduled date of March 2012.

Survey: Most US Catholics support gay rights 185
11:12 AM — A study of US Catholics says they are more supportive of gay rights than the general public and other Christians. The Public Religion Research Institute study found that almost half (43 per cent) of Catholics support gay marriage and 56 per cent say gay relationships are not sinful.

1:34 PM — A lesbian minister in the US state of Wisconsin is to appear before a church trial. Rev Amy DeLong will face charges after she presided over a 2009 ceremony for a lesbian couple and registered her own relationship as a domestic partnership.

3:58 PM — The US state of Arizona has quickly pushed through legislation to ban the picketing of funerals. The Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church had planned to picket the funeral of a nine-year-old girl to gain publicity but now says it will not disrupt the event in exchange for air time on radio stations.

German theologian says Catholic Church homophobia ’caused by gay priests’ 12
5:59 PM — A German theologian claims that homophobia in the Catholic Church is caused by gay priests who cannot be open about their sexuality. David Berger, an expert on St Thomas Aquinas and former publisher of a Catholic magazine, told a German publication that the Vatican needs to admit it has many gay clergy.

5:05 PM — Sexual health charities, politicians and gay rights campaigners have welcomed what appears to be a relaxation in Pope Benedict XVI's opposition to the use of condoms. In an interview for a book that is due to be published this week, the Pontiff argued that in some cases, the use of condoms can be the first step in the direction of "moralisation" of an individual.

5:01 PM — The Bishop of Wakefield, the Rt Revd Stephen Platten, says that the Church of England must listen to gay people inside and outside the church. Writing after attending a gay group's meeting, he said he felt "shamed" because he had not listened to gay people.

5:36 PM — A 'kiss-in' will be held as part of Sunday's Valentine's Day protest against the Pope's visit to the UK. Demonstrators plan to march from London's Westminster Cathedral to the Italian embassy in Grosvenor Square and those willing are being asked to take five minutes to publicly show their love for their partners.
Church of England approves pension rights for gay civil partners 7
12:13 PM — The Church of England General Synod yesterday approved giving the civil partners of deceased gay clergy equal pensions rights. This means that they will be given the same pensions benefits as heterosexual widows or widowers.
