    5:16 PM — Gay equality opponents in Washington DC were barred by a judge from holding a referendum on gay marriage yesterday. Judge Judith N Macaluso said allowing voters to strike down the law would "authorise discrimination".

    7:15 PM — Washington DC's mayor Adrian Fenty has signed a bill allowing gay marriage in the district. He signed it at a public ceremony at All Souls Church, which has a gay-friendly Unitarian congregation.

    DC is expected to pass the gay marriage bill

    1:14 PM — Washington DC's council will today vote on a bill allowing gay marriage in the district. Advocates are quietly confident, as nine of the council's 13 members are listed as co-sponsors and mayor Adrian Fenty has clearly signalled he will sign it.
