The United Nations has said that a pro-gay Bollywood music video produced earlier this year is the most successful clip they have produced.

The video, which tells the story of a gay man bringing his new partner home to meet his family, was released to press in April at the launch of the UN’s ‘Free and Equal’ campaign in Mumbai.

The short video features Bollywood star and  former Miss India, Celina Jaitly.

Lyrics in the video include: “It is a new look, it is a new attitude.

“You might wonder where the old way of living has gone, but who is worried about who likes what, as long as in the world of love two people want to be with eachother?”

Charles Radcliff, of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, tweeted: “Bollywood vid has become one of the UN’s most watched ever with over 1 million views.”

Jaitly tweeted: “As my song/video for @UN @free_equal #thewelcome crosses 1MILLION VIEWS on @YouTube I feel so blessed in the holy mnth of Ramadan!ThNk U ALL”

Homosexuality was re-criminalised in the country last year, when the Supreme Court decided to re-enact Section 377 of the penal code, a colonial-era sodomy ban.

The UN Human Rights Commissioner said the move represented “a significant step backwards for India and a blow for human rights.”,while the UK Foreign Office labelled it “unexpected”.

According to the UN, the Free & Equal campaign “aims to raise awareness of homophobic and transphobic violence and discrimination, and encourage greater respect for the rights of LGBT people”.
