Sure, Italy is backward from this point of view but things aren't as clear-cut as you may perceive. I wore make-up to school and although it wasn't unnoticed, I wasn't ostracised either. In fact, I had lots of friends and many teachers were openly supportive of my sexual orientation in front of my class, and this at a time where in UK schools it was illegal for a teacher to even talk to students about homosexuality. Surely you can't compare Italy, that simultaneously hosted World Gay Pride and the catholic church's holy year, to a country like Russia where gay events are not even allowed. Italy, where the only transgender MP in Europe has recently won the popularity vote in a celebrity tv show against more traditional macho and girly celebs. Surely there's lots of idiots in Italy, and it's generally linked with the fact that it seems very difficult to get rid of the older generations there than it is elsewhere in Europe but before you pass judgements on other countries, look at all the hate crimes going on in the UK, homophobic chanting on the football pitch and murders of gay teens.
