Thanks for the criticism. I would point to Zapatero's Campaign speech on equality. You could easily Google that one. He was being provoked by the Catholic Church and the associated electorate. He reacted strongly. One of the first things he did in office was to bring in Gay Marriage. Prop 8 has definitely won you support. By the way, You cannot marry in the UK either!

I agree with Robert here, regretably the US electorate is still a few years away from being ready to advocate full gay marriage. The evangelical demographic will steamroll unequivocal gay rights every time, and they are still a formidable political force to be reckoned with.
For now I think this was the best outcome we could've realistically achieved, at least it's a step in the right direction. Force the issue any further and we'd be looking at a John McCain victory, and nothing would've been gained for gay equality.

Ian, no politician in his or right mind would run for the highest office in the land advocating marriage equality, it would be political suicide. Yes, Obama said he opposes gays marrying but he also does not oppose any state enacting marriage equality and acknowledge that it would be wrong to vote yes on proposition 8 as did speaker of the house, Nanc Pelosi, another democrat. Not one conservative (republican) running for high office would even take that view. Many republicans don't even want domestic partnerships or civil unions either for straights or gays.

Let's not get too caught up in the moment. It is undoubtably good news that Barack won, but let's not forget that he stands opposed to gay marriage. Could be a short honeymoon. Perhaps?
