I've holidayed in Provence and the Cote D'Azur and find them wonderful - excxept for St Tropez. It's a tacky, crammed, overpriced tourist trap and is far too hyped up. There are much nicer (and quieter) spots to visit along the coast. The traffic is a complete nightmare - not worth the bother IMO.

St. Tropez and the areas around it truly are lovely. It's worth avoiding during the high season since it's just too full (and the traffic is pure hell), but in late Spring and in early Autumn, it's just divine.

Staying in St. Tropez is, of course, fun but if you want to save a few pennies and get the chance to see some of the lovely sights in the countryside around there, staying in La-Croix-Valmer or Cavalière is a good choice. And you get the chance to enjoy the lovely country roads on the way to St-Tropez (well worth renting a cabriolet for!)

Don't forget to stop at Château Minuty near Gassin. It's one of the best wines in Provence and if you're driving back home, I'd recommend doing what I always do: Trying to see the maximum amount of bottles I can fit in my car!

It's a lovely area and it's definitely one of those places everyone should see at least once (though I'd bet that once you've visited, you'll already be planning your next trip there on your way home!!)
