I think that whatever this vicar – who claims to be a man of God – deserves, will be give to him in abundance.

In Matthew 7:1-2, Jesus says: 1″Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

May God have mercy on his soul.

Leaving aside the apology forced upon him by public opinion and his own soul searching – surely this would be a case for prosecution! It is about time our rights are followed up on each and every case of homophobia – it is only then can we stop the harassment, the beatings and the social isolation. I also hope the London Diocese takes the talking too seriously and re-considers his position in the church.

Leaving aside the asinine comment about the highly restricted 1967 Act being "generous" he claims that the Evening Standard took his words out of context. Perhaps he could tell us in which context such words would be seen as appropriate?

Rev Mullen claims he "was not criticising individual homosexuals," that "many homosexual men and women" are his close friends, and cites the fact that he voted in favour of the Homosexual Reform Act of 1967 as proof of his good will towards gays and lesbians.

Here we are again with "some of my best friends are gay, I simply meant to say they'd be better off with tattoos on them saying 'unclean' in large capital letters and they should stay indoors in a closet for fear of infecting the rest of the population."
Where are all these self-loathing gays who hang out with outspoken homophobes of their own free will? They need psychiatric help almost as much as Rev. Mullen.
As for voting in favour of the 1967 reform act, that's like saying "I voted for the abolition of slavery but now the blacks want equal rights too!" I suppose he'd be happy if gay equality had ended with decriminalisation.

Something about leopards and spots occurs to me, and, to mix the metaphor, ducking to avoid enemy fire. But who on Earth are his many homosexual friends?? Talk about rock-bottom self-esteem on their part!! Unless they are Christians who think they can redeem him….

He is delusional. I read his piece and it was offensive,clearly not humorous or a joke. This cowardly bigot denigrates and abuses gay men and lesbians and then when criticised say I was only joking. In fact his pathetic apology insults us still with the ridiculous idea that our sexuality is fine as long as it is not expressed or acknowledged publically. He suggests that any attempt to have our sexuality recognised is unreasonable or offensive. He is so transparent with his look I can laugh at myself because Sandi Toksvig joked about me so we can all forget it and just have a laugh. The sort of hatred he espouses gives permission for verbal and physical abuse and the isolation he would like to see gay men and lesbians have leads to misery. I can see nothing funny about this man and he will continue to spout his bigotry.

While I'm inclined to sympathise with Rev'd Mullen's views about "casual sex, heterosexual or homosexual," I note that he was expelled from his Yorkshire parish in 1989 for an adulterous liaison with a parishioner. If Scripture and the traditions of the Church are somewhat ambiguous on the subject of homosexuality, the same cannot be said for adultery. Hardly a man of moral authority on matters of sexual ethics.
