Stonewall Cymru launches DVD to fight homophobic bullying
Gay equality organisation Stonewall has launched a DVD to tackle homophobic bullying in schools across Wales.
The DVD, entitled Spell It Out, was launched jointly at St Asaph, Denbighshire, Cardiff County Hall and Ysgol Glan Clwyd, and is backed by the Welsh Assembly Government.
The purpose of the DVD is to educated teachers on issues of sexuality, homophobic bullying, and how to deal with it more effectively.
Education Minister Jane Hutt told BBC News:
"I urge all schools to use these materials as a starting point to engage young people in classroom discussions to better inform them about bullying of this nature.
"I sincerely hope that these resources, along with Welsh Assembly Government guidelines that will be issued next year, will help towards bringing an end to the victimisation of individuals based on their sexuality."
The release of the DVD follows the start of Stonewall’s wider campaign to tackle homophobia, launched earlier this year.
Posters, postcards and stickers bearing the slogan "Some people are gay. Get over it!" were distributed to schools supporting the campaign against homophobia.
The slogan ran as a billboard campaign in 600 locations across the country, and recently featured on panels in London’s tube trains as part of Stonewall’s "back to school" campaign.
