It is not illiberal to identify the perpetrators of such senseless violence, especially when the local police are so quick to release suspects such as the three who committed this atrocious attack, on bail. The local community has the right to know if they are at risk even if this implicates a degree of religious profiling.

Not long ago a woman was the victim of a homophobic acid attack on the road just next to Boundary Street, Calvert Avenue. Enough is indeed enough. I just wish the wider press would report such crimes.

Tom, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve been reading PinkNews for quite a while and virtually all the reports I’ve read indicate that the gay-bashing thugs were natives not immigrants. Instead of vilifying muslims we should be adamant in opposing racist acts against them while never giving an inch to islamist homophobes. But we certainly can’t expose and isolate the homophobes if all muslims see and hear are a bunch of brownshirts and skinheads calling for another genocidal crusade.

Islamophobia is exactly and precisely like anti-Semitism and exactly and precisely like hatred of people of African or Asian origin. If you’ve read any of my opinions you’ll know that I take the view that promoters of homophobic incitements to violence should as harshly punished as the thugs who commit the crimes. However remote they are from the scene of the violence, they should be charged as accessories to crimes of violence. Saying that we’re sinners, that we shouldn’t enjoy the right to marriage or any other common right, or that we’re depraved, or child molesters and etc. is incitement to violence.

Just as I think that racists in the Tory party and the BNP who incite violence against minority and immigrant ethnicities should be charged as accomplices of the skinheads who kill young muslims and Africans.

Re: Dennis's comments – sadly I don't think closeted gayness is likely to be the motive for these boys. It's just part of a growing gang/knife culture that doesn't see life as at all precious. And this is across all communities: asian, white and black. Obviously social deprivation and boredom has a lot to do with it and we need to tackle the roots of these problems in our society first – but that is never to excuse the totally repulsive act of stabbing another human being.

Much as I decry JasonReese's frankly loopy comments, I’m sorry to break it to you but I know for a fact that this attack was carried out by a group of Bengali lads. They had already had an argument with a group of guys who came out of the George and Dragon after goading them for being gay, then fired up by that 10 minutes later they charged at the victim attacking him ferociously. They are part of a known Bengali gang who have been causing trouble over the past few years, some of it homophobic. Recently a lesbian woman was attacked coming out of a local restaurant on Calvert Avenue. I myself have had stones thrown at me by them when walking home from the G&D.

It's not racist to acknowledge this fact – purely pragmatic. As a gay man living on the Boundary Estate where the attack took place I want to know who to be looking out for and be able to call the police helpline when a gang is looking threatening or up to no good. And that doesn’t preclude me from recognising that the vast majority of Bengali people are peace-loving and friendly, like those living in my block.

But we have to accept the fact that there is a growing extremist islamofascist strain of islam that is preaching hatred against gay and lesbian people and this is filtering down to the streets. Why is it wrong to condemn this? In precisely the way that we would condemn anti-Semitism, racism or homophobia from any other group. Tell me one way in which condemning prejudice and hatred is in itself prejudiced or islamophobic! It’s the complete opposite of, say, anti-Semitism, for example.
In other words, misguided bleeding heart liberalism is only going to lead to more bleeding…

It's not racist acknowledging this fact, purely pragmatic – as a gay man in the area I would prefer to know who to watch out for. At the same time of course the vast majority of asian muslims are peace-loving and friendly (like those living in my block). I really don't think a kind of misguided liberal attitude to this sort of thing should get in the way of admitting who is causing the trouble. Maybe a bit of both, although I doubt that Luke has what it takes to be a street fascist. He’d probably prefer a conference in a comfy setting like Wannsee over a street brawl any day. I think it’s unlikely he’d have the guts to spew his garbage in a situation where someone might confront him. That could be dangerous. It is here in the US and I suspect that's the case in your country too.

Even Luke’s use of the term "race", as in "What race is islam again Bill?" proves it. Geneticists, anthropologists, population experts and sociologists all deny the existence of "races" entirely. Race was invented by English traders and American plantation owners to justify the slave trade but it has no basis in reality. The scientists opinions are far saner that the opinion of your average brown shirted bigot, proving that while there are no “races” there are racists.

Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary General said "When the world is compelled to coin a new term to take account of increasingly widespread bigotry that is a sad and troubling development. Such is the case with Islamophobia." Racism is bigotry and islamophobia, like anti-Semitism is racism, whether it’s applied to people for ethnic or religions reasons. Unfortunately Luke and his ilk will simply dismiss Annan because he’s not as melanin challenged as they are.
