Education minister to support LGBT History Month
The organisers of LGBT History Month have said they are delighted that the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families will be attending their pre-launch event in November.
While History Month has attracted support from other government ministers and organisations such as the Crown Prosecution Service and the London Criminal Justice Board, it is the first time an education minister will attend the pre-launch.
The fifth Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) History Month is in February and the pre-launch is held to encourage local authorities, public and voluntary organisations, schools, universities, unions and individuals to organise their own events.
LGBT History Month was started by campaigning organisation Schools OUT.
Founded and run by volunteers in the wake of the abolition of Section 28, it has grown each year.
Tony Fenwick of Schools OUT told PinkNews.co.uk:
"We are delighted that the DCSF is taking transphobic and homophobic bullying seriously. It looks like they are going to tackle the challenge."
Minister Kevin Brennan is no stranger to gay issues.
A former teacher, in February he addressed the Schools OUT conference. He has committed the government to eradicating homophobic bullying from British schools.
