Anon, the fact that we have to "modify" our behaviour is synonymous with Jacqui Smith's advice to gay Iranian asylum seekers. What would she and others say to a non-gay Iranian christian fleeing religious persecution by islamic fundamentalist mullahs who want to rid their society of infidels who happen to be non-muslims? Ship them back to face possible death? Similarly would she deport female refugees who are the victims of genital mutilation? The answer is YES and many who post on this site would agree with her.

its true that the true homophobes are the public bodies that are always stating how they have embraced diversty. Well they have as long as you shut up and say nothing. Local councils and highway agencies, police forces. too many too mention. I have complained, and generally the most favoured comment is its the same of hetrosexuals. When of course is not. As a gay man I have to modfify my behavior, daily to suit what ever surrondings I am in , just in case there is some one that will react to my sexuality. Where I live some one said to me that most people dont mind me being gay. But as for the rest of those most did, and a few years of abuse. This counrty will never have true equilty. The are in place but they are mostly ignored.

Anon, I'm surprised that Jacqui Smith isn't refuting the validity of this survey since she totally ignores the plight of Iranian and other Islamic gay people fleeing persecution for asylum in the UK. Maybe British gays should just be "discreet" and not make themselves so obvious as well as shut their mouths at every provocation. Absolutely mind-boggling, isn't it?

The Government should do what the LGBT Intercom Trust does in Devon…simply ignore, marginalise & exclude those LGBT persons with 1st hand knowledge & experience of Homophobic police & hate crime, then the government could, just like the Intercom Trust, spout more boullocs about how wonderful the police are to gay people and put a whole new meaning on 'riming' a brown sheriffs badge!

There is a GOOD reason why most gay people do not report homophobic crime to the police…the reason IS very simple, the Police continuing homophobic attitudes STILL towards gay persons and the protection & harbouring of gay haters within the police rank & file.

I think it's probably the worst for young guys. A lot of straight low lifes hate any guy young and goodlooking and gay. I'm 60 now but that'd the way it was when I was young here in the U.S.

To find homophobes & gay haters in my personal experience one needs look no further than my local police force…there is a bleedy good reason many gay people don't report homophobic hate crime…who wants to be abused a 2nd time by the police…and then have it covered up by the ineffectual & useless Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The single most likely person to violate & abuse the life of a gay person where I live…IS A POLICE OFFICER!
