Pop Idol helps Blackpool show its Pride
More than 8,000 people flocked to the seaside resort of Blackpool over the weekend to celebrate Pride.
The third annual festival was hailed as a huge success by organisers, who revealed they are to hold talks with Blackpool Council about bidding to host EuroPride.
Pop Idol winner Michelle McManus was one of the acts performing this year's two-day festival.
More than 200 people took part in a Pride parade, replete with floats, mermaids and human penguins, down Blackpool Promenade on Saturday afternoon.
Mark Seargent, founder of Blackpool Pride, told the Blackpool Gazette:
"It has been significantly better than last year.
"There is a woman's area for the first time, which has been packed.
"We are about 15 years behind Manchester, but if we can add two or three thousand extra people a year it will grow slowly.
"We always aim to make it better but we want to keep it safe."
