Hilary, as I'd said in an earlier posting several weeks back, since civil partnerships aren't marriages and in the interests of equality for all, these partnerships should be available to everyone, straight couples and same-sex straight family members alike if they're that equal to marriage. We're living in different times, there are different kinds of relationships, gay and straight. Society should recognise that and adapt to it. I see no reason why single cohabiting people should be penalised simply because they don't want to or can't marry or in the case of gay people, cannot.

These two choose to live in this tax jurisdiction and should not whinge about rules that apply to everyone.Their situation is in no way comparable to that of a couple who undertake to marry or enter into a civil partnership. They are just trying to avoid legitimate inheritance tax.It seems to me that they were just too stingy to pay for proper tax planning at an appropriate age. Now, maybe there is an argument to raise the IT threshold to £1,000,000…

I don't see the injustice. If I were to spend my life looking after my dear old grandaddy until he finally popped his clogs I'd get stung for inheritance tax just the same as these two.The point has been made that a line has to be drawn. No one wants to pay more tax than they have to and I have to give it to these two for giving it a go, but I do very strongly feel they were trying it on.

I feel so sorry for them, and all that effort to get knocked back by the European courts who usually jump at the chance to overrule the British courts...especially when they should be overturning the decisions

They are a domestic unit and should be treated as such. There is nothing about marriage that is superior to what these two are doing. Sex/procreation is not the point.

Its about time our government address the injustice and inequity that these two elderly ladies must endure. In the interests of equality and a fairer system, open civil partnerships to everyone, without exception. This is nothing more than heartless, dispassionate and insulting to those excluded from protection at a late stage in their lives. Absolutely disgraceful!
