Stevie Wonderful wins UK drag king contest
A London-based disability rights worker and part-time student has been crowned "King of the Castle" at the first ever National Drag King competition, which was held on Sunday.
Stevie Wonderful, a.k.a. Fiona King, was triumphant after an enthusiastic Camden audience were treated to heats in evening/club wear, sleep/swim wear and performance.
"Competitors wooed Judges Deni Francis, Sadie Lee and Julie McNamara with jauntily tilted top hats, skimpy boxer shorts and an African Dashiki," said the event's promoter, Lenna Cumberbatch.
"Otis Blue, a smoky, sexy character portrayed by Law Ballard and Tio, a cocky, gay, Swedish boy portrayed by Emily Chong, worked the crowd and judges into a frenzy.
"It was Stevie Wonderful’s vocal prowess that pulled the aptly named 'King' to the top.
"King, a wheelchair user, was a first time Drag King but after some initial trepidation was 'in it to win it' and win she did.
"It was a lot of hard work but I was really looking forward to seeing what the contestants got up to.
"They all put a lot of effort into their costumes and performances which was really nice to see and appreciated by all in attendance.”
