I read this story with horror and disbelief and also logged onto the Caycompass (www.caycompass.com) website to get some more info on it. The letters to editor pages show some interesting comments – quite a few people have picked up the have just jeopardised their tourist trade. It seems to have also been infiltrated by a few non-inlander homosexuals with a few choice postings. The also have a poll online to ask what people think homosexuals should be allowed to do on the islands – results are a bit shockingDo whatever heterosexuals do – 14.6% (625 votes)Hold hands, but no kissing - .03% - 11 votesCan’t show public affection at all – 21.8% - 934 votesHomosexuality outlawed – 63.2% - 2712 votesDon’t know - .03% - 11 votes. The islands’ population is only 48000, so clearly a bit of an issue if nearly 10% of the islands population has voted. The UK provides financial assistance to the Overseas Territories via the Department of International Development, so these bigoted spongers are living off our taxes whilst advocating that we should be locked up for winking at the waiter. Possibly there’s a lot of inbreeding that’s caused then to be so f**king ignorant.

so, they depend on tourism and probably handouts, and certainly military protection from the UK, but they remain bigots. If these three factors were removed from them I would have no problem with them living their primitive lives as long as LGBT people were given the money the UK would save to set up lives in more civilised places.

So the Cayman Islands, a British overseas territory doesn't want civil partnerships, let alone recognise them. I find that a bit rich considering that Spain was pushed by the UK to force it to recognise them, yet the Cayman Islands are allowed to discriminate. How would our government react to a British civil partnered couple in the same situation as the American couple who were detained for simply kissing in public? We should do what Holland does, compel its dependencies and territores to recognise the legal partnerships of its gay citizens, in Hollands case, marriage.
