It's just that some rights are treated as absolute by politicians, while others have to be introduced "carefully, taking into account cultural differences".We can see this in the UK, where immigration officers don't treat LGBT properly with regard to asylum.We have to keep on lobbying and embarrassing people. And if the more "primitive" Eastern European countries can't embrace diversity, then maybe they don't need the handouts.... However, I do agree with your main point about how attitudes vary widely across the EU. The EU has lost its liberal approach because of the accession of these states. I bet its those newer eastern member states causing the trouble, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Russia and other eastern bloc members. Since when do they get to pick which laws they don't want to obey? Seems to me it isn't.To digress just a bit, I've always wondered why the UK's military were forced to allow openly gay men and women to serve, yet Greece and others weren't. In Greece, no gay man or woman may serve in the military since successive governments label homosexuality as an mental illness, why were we singled out for compliance with EU laws and others weren't?
