I'd just be happy if they'd recognize our partnership, the US does not see same sex partnerships as valid for immigration..so we're stuck.

Just how divisive could a referendum be with support for marriage so high and climbing every day?Civil Partnerships are a major step toward true equality but they will never be equal as long as CP's are denied to straight couples and marriage is denied to gay couples.We in America learned a long time ago that separate institutions given to minorities are NEVER equal even when they offer the same rights, benefits and responsibilities. If they were REALLY the same then you wouldn't have so many people fighting to keep them separate.Civil Partnerships like civil unions and domestic partnerships, in the eyes of the law and in the eyes of the vast majority of straight people, are nothing more than legally recognized flatmates.

In the USA civil unions provide 1/3 the benefits of marriage. In Massachusetts where gay marriage is the law the only change has been that gay heterosexual couples have equal rights.
