Paddick still favourite with gay voters

The results of the second PinkNews.co.uk Mayor of London poll show that Lib Dem candidate Brian Paddick still leads among respondents.

225 people who live in the London area took part in the poll.

Mr Paddick, who until last year was the most senior out gay police officer in the UK, won 43.5%, or 98 of the first preference votes.

He was followed by incumbent Mayor and Labour candidate Ken Livingstone, with 29.4% (66 votes).

Tory candidate Boris Johnson won 12% (27 votes).

Lindsey German, candidate for The Left List, won 8.9% or 20 first preference votes.

Green candidate Sian Berry took 4.9%, or 11 first preference votes, the BNP’s Richard Barnbrook won 0.9% (2 votes) and Damian Hockney of One London won one first preference vote.

The Mayor of London is elected by the Supplementary Vote (SV) system, whereby if one candidate fails to win 50% of the first preference votes, the two candidates with the most first choice votes go through to a second stage.

All the other candidates are eliminated but the second choice votes on their ballot papers are reviewed.

If their second choice vote is for either of the top two candidates these votes are added to their totals.

Mr Paddick won a further 12 second preference votes from people who voted Boris Johnson first and one from a person who voted for Ms Berry, giving him a total of 111 or 49.3%

Mr Livingstone won 15 second preference votes from supporters of The Left List candidate Lindsey German and seven from people who voted for Ms Berry as first preference, a total of 88 or 39.1%

Of the 225 respondents, 193 described themselves as gay, 8 as straight, 8 as lesbians, 12 as bisexual, one as transgendered, two as transexual and one as trans.

In the previous PinkNews.co.uk Mayor of London poll conducted in February, 316 people took part and Mr Paddick also emerged the winner.

The PinkNews.co.uk Mayor of London poll took place between 18th March and 23rd March. 225 readers who registered with a London postcode had their preferences recorded.

Five candidates for Mayor have so far confirmed they will attend a hustings organised by gay equality organisation Stonewall.

Mayor Ken Livingstone, Tory Boris Johnson, Lib Dem Brian Paddick, Green candidate Sian Berry and Respect – The Left list candidate Lindsey German will all speak and answer questions at the event at BFI Southbank on Saturday 19th April.

The Stonewall hustings will be the last before Londoners go to the polls on May 1st.
