Frenchie, if your girlfriend had any sense, she should move to Canada with you where she will have her full legal rights. You can both get married there, legally. Under Obama or Clinton, you won't get every legal right, maybe 95% of them and it won't happen over night, it will be low in the pecking order of things, bottom rung of the ladder. Even legally gay married couples in Massachusetts still don't enjoy the 1300 or more federal rights that are conferred to straight married couples even though they can marry in that state. Canada gives you all that, try to convince her to move back with you. I know I would given the chance.

I am in a commited relationship with an american in a same sex relationship and have been trying to secure legal employment for almost a year now so her and I can be together. I am Canadian... for a little while now same sex couples have had all the *legal* rights has heterosexual couples have. Of course, it would be a piece of cake for her and I to move to Canada together and build our life there. For many reasons, we had to choose America as our home America is where we want to stay. The immigration laws in this country make it virtually impossible for me to build a life here as a queer woman. Those are the facts. The emotional aspet to that is my fiancée and I may be seperated and forced to live in different countries. The rigid heterosexist laws have put a toll on me, on us and my mental health. I am a highly educated woman who had a very promising career in Canada. Love brought me here and I wish love we're enough, that we couldh have the same rights as heterosexual couples do. I sincerly hope that Obama will follow through on this. My livelyhood, my family depends on this.
