Actor Sir Ian McKellen and singer Will Young were among the presenters at last night's Brit awards.

Sir Ian joked that he had only come along so he could meet singer Mika.

Boy band Take That, who began their career more than a decade ago playing in gay clubs, won the awards for best British live act and best British single.

Gay favourite Kylie Minogue said she was "grateful and thankful" after being named best international female.

Chart-topping singer-songwriter Mika was named best British breakthrough act.

The 24-year-old's hit single Grace Kelly spent weeks at the top of the charts and his debut album Life In Cartoon Motion has sold in excess of half a million copies since it was released last year.

His camp performances have sent gay pulses racing, but he refuses to be drawn, which led to speculation that he may be gay or bisexual, leading some commentators to coin descriptive phrases like 'ambisexual' and 'gaybe.'

Despite speculation about his sexuality, Mika has dismissed the issue of his sexual orientation as the "million dollar question," but stopped short of giving a million dollar answer.

He insists that people should be more concerned about his material than his sexuality.

Mika performed at last night's ceremony with Gossip lead singer Beth Ditto, who has become one of the best-loved lesbians in music.
