anon, no offence taken at all. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and we can also agree to disagree. I know I'm in the minority opinion in the UK among the LGBT community, but with Sweden probably being the next country to ditch civil partnerships/unions that have been in place since the 90s and replace them with for full marriage equality, it seems that marriage is the way to go. As soon as Sweden legislates it, don't be surprised to see Norway and Denmark follow suit. Denmark in fact was the first country to ever conceive of civil unions/partnerships for same sex couples that will bring the number of countries offering marriage to eight.

anon, the Dutch definitely are the most progressive society on earth, no question about that and the first to recognise equality for all, full equality. Only they could do what they're doing in regard to fighting homophobia at home and overseas, no other country would dare do it. Being gay has never been illegal in the Netherlands, at least not mentioned in their legal system. Canada though has gone a step further, it allows non-Canadians to marry in their country and I think Spain now does the same. Canada and Spain also recognise legally married gay couples from countries who offer marriage too. The UK unfortunately does NOT recognise married same-sex from the five countries that offer marriage, not even its own citizens who marry outside of the UK. We have a very long way to go on equality for sure as do others.

The United States does not recognize gay married couples entering the US. If they have children, one must state they are the one and only parent. If the child is sick, the "left out spouse" cannot assist in any decision making. I hope The Netherlands would do the same. Not recognize ANY United States citizens' marriage and treat them, as the US does not recognize the same sex marriage of Netherlands citizens!
