The Lesbian and Gay Christian movement has appointed a new assistant chief executive.

Rev Sharon Ferguson, a Theology and Psychology graduate, said she hopes that she can work hard towards a time when groups like LGCM are no longer needed.

She said she looked forward to a time:

"When all people regardless of how they express they sexuality are treated as equal members of the body of Christ.

"When all people regardless of whatever label they place on their gender identity or sexual orientation will be recognised as being made in God's image and declared 'good.'"

Michael Egan, the chair of LGCM's trustees said he had been delighted to appoint Sharon to the new post and looked forward to working with her especially as the next year promises to be an important one for the Movement.

"Sharon's commitment to justice and equality, and her experience in work and in ministry as a lesbian Christian, came through very strongly in the appointment process," he said.

The Revd Richard Kirker, LGCM Chief Executive also welcomed the appointment of such an experienced candidate: "Sharon brings a wide variety of skills to the post.

"She has a proven record as a successful manager in the voluntary sector and exceptional experience of a wide range of discrimination issues that will be highly relevant."

The Gay Christian Movement was originally established in 1976 and has encompassed many groups until its name change to include lesbians in 1987.
