I feel privileged to live not far away from where Verlaine and Rimbaud stayed. Even now, there are many gay men who marry (like Verlaine) to keep conventional society off their backs but whose sexuality invariable catches up with them eventually. Certain elements of contemporary society would do well to learn from the lessons of a bigoted past. Sexuality has to be in the genes or how else to explain gay men and women worldwide from all cultural and religous backgrounds? Why continue to hold our genetic make-up against us, as so many people still do? While sympathising with Verlaine and Rimbaud, we should also look closer to home.
