Gay themes at the Jewish Film Festival
Katherine Knowles
The UK Jewish Film Festival in its 11th year is presenting an eclectic range of films this season, including several that are concerned with Jewish-gay issues and perspectives.
Screenings of 43 films, 25 of which are UK premieres, will open in cinemas all over London this November, and a new "on tour" initiative will be bringing the films to cinemas across the UK from January to March.
"After the incredible success of the last two years we have responded to the enthusiasm of our audiences to provide an even bigger and better programme this year!," said Judy Ironside, the festival director.
"This is our strongest programme so far and we are sure that our audiences will agree when they see the diversity and scope of the films."
Among the films focusing on homosexuality and Judaism some really stand out.
Jerusalem is Proud to Present follows the preparations for last year's gay pride parade in Jerusalem - something covered extensively on PinkNews.co.uk.
The film shockingly brings home the serious issues faced by the organisers and participants, who discover that the one thing that seems to temporarily unite Christian and Arab leaders alike is their reluctance to see pride go ahead.
The Quest for the Missing Piece is an insightful look at the ritual of circumcision through the eyes of a gay Jewish man living with his non-Jewish partner, and in The Bubble, Etyan Fox - director of the acclaimed Walk on Water - retells the story of Romeo and Juliet in Tel Aviv when an Israeli soldier meets and falls in love with a Palestinian man whilst on checkpoint duty.
Although the concept sounds a little tired, the film is sensitive, insightful and beautiful, packing a real emotional punch.
