Dominick, I'm aware that equality for blacks was won at the federal level, but no democrat in the Clinton, Obama, Edwards triumvirate would ever introduce marriage equality at the federal level. It will be someone like Feingold or Kucinich, the only two who aren't afraid to risk their careers, but do you really think if they did, the democratic party would get behind it and support passage? I don't. For the three frontrunners its political suicide, their careers are far more important than the rights of the people they represent. Its always been that way when it comes to controversial issues such as this. Its what happened in New Jersey, the opted for second rate civil unions when they could have easily gone for marriage, the votes were there. They did it to remain in office and to not upset the religious bigots and conservative constituents. Its what happened in the UK, Blair admitted he didn't want to go the way of marriage because it would upset the moral majority in the church and their own party constituents and give power to the Tory party. Its so transparent. Its called cowardice, nothing new there.

Robert it wasn't a State by State movemnet that got our sisters and brothers of the Balck community to gain full equality. If the Federal Government says so, it will be done!It would a lot easier if the individual States already passed marriage equality, but if the Federal Government passed it the States have to abide by it.

Dominick, Clinton has said that if the legislature approved marriage equality she would not veto it. However, I don't see that happening so soon. Its going to be a state by state uphill battle to get governors to sign off and then only if they're democrats of course. Corzine of NJ said he'd not veto the upgrade from civil unions to marriage if approved. What is so awful is that we're going to end up with a country where only half if that permit marriage. Its going to be a mess and a bureaucratic nightmare for a lot of people. Bill is right, we need a federal equality bill that must include all rights in the manner of ERA, including marriage rights, without that, we're going nowhere fast. We have our work cut out for us. Its our job now to convince the dems that full equality is the only way to go. Either they support it or they no longer get our votes, let alone take them for granted.

Robert I hear what you're saying, but there still is a better chance that if the legislature can come together, like the California legislature has done on several occasins, and write a comprhensive fully Inclusive bill, She would not vetoe it. There are quite a few more Gays in Congress to represent us and friends of Gays and they are not in there by chance, they've been voted in by their constiuients. Something Arnold doesn't seem to grasp! He's not that smart, But any of those other Dems you mention is! Any way I'm betting and hoping on it.

Dominick, Clinton has said that she would support civil unions with most of the rights of marriage, not all, at the federal level, either way we lose. Obama and Edwards also endorse her stand on not granting marriage equality to gay and lesbian citizens. Its a sellout, the same crap every four years. So what they are saying is that they really don't believe in full equality for all, except Kucinich, Gravel, Feingold, Pelosi and Kennedy.

They will only be second rate Civil Unions if we allow that to happen. If they want to call same sex marriage a CIVIL UNION then so be it BUT that must mandate ALL the same rights that go along with Marriage for heteros!

Bill, I hear you, but under Clinton or the other two, they would NEVER go for a federal amendment for equality since it means full marriage equality. They've already said, no marriage for gays, only second rate civil unions.

As usuall our elected officials Don't listen to us, the majority of the GLBT community!. How in the world can they think that Freedoms are separate for different people? It's like saying we will protect brain damaged kids but those born out of chemical abuse are not protected!Barney Frank should be ashamed of himself!

The only solution to the problem of marriage rights is a federal constitutional amendment guaranteeing equality, a GLBT version of the ERA. Until we build a massive, militant campaign and achieve that goal the Democratic and Republican bigots will continue to deny us meaningful protections and keep us in a status of second class citizenship, a very hazardous status to be in. The Democratic an Republican bigots have causef untold problems and suffering for our communities and yet people continue to fantasize about them and create excuses for them. We can’t ignore that Clinton is a prowar hawk whose agenda is the same as the oil pirates Bush and Cheney, that she wants to extend the war, that she and the Democrats are union busters, etc. All the wishful thinking in the world won’t change that one iota. What conceivable reason would anyone have for supporting a war hawk, a union buster, an employee of the insurance industry, and the midwife of Don't Ask Don't Tell and the federal antimarriage equality DOMA? A very astute man once said that "Republicans are like big cats trying to run us down. Democrats, on the other hand are like pet snakes, feed em, keep em warm, but don’t trust em that much because just when you think they’re your friends…” Our only alternative is to turn and fight, to build our own independent mass action campaigns around hate crimes, job and housing discrimination, samesex marriage, etc., and doing what it takes to build the union led US Labor Party. A third party led the Second American Revolution and we can do it again. In fact, we have to do it again.

Bill, what we need to do in the U.S. is to band together and push for the removal of tax-exempt status from every right wing religious denomination from interfering in the political process whose intent is to influence the outcome of antigay legislation and the election of antigay candidates. Further, faith-based organizations funded by the government should be banned. Its about time they learned what separation of church and state really means. We need freedom from religion in every aspect of the political process and religion should not be allowed as a litmus test to elect candidates or presidents. We're becoming a theocracy, slowly but surely.
