A scheme to help tackle homophobia in the workplace and improve employers' attitudes to lesbian and gay issues has received backing from the Scottish Executive

The Scottish Executive is set to back a scheme to tackle homophobia in the workplace.

The Diversity Champions project, launched this month by Stonewall Scotland after success in England and Wales, has received supported from the Scottish government.

Supporters hope the scheme will help end bullying based on sexuality in Scotland's workplace and improve Scottish employer's positions in the Work Equality Index, a list of top places to work for gays and lesbians.

Stonewall Scotland's Calum Irving: "The whole point of Diversity Champions Scotland is that people work better when they can be themselves."

"By promoting diversity, employers would discover happier employees, better customer service and a more effective organisation."

The Diversity Champions project encourages employers to tackle gay issues in the workplaces. It comes after recently introduced laws that ban prejudice based on sexuality at work.
