A Malaysian man has been charged with the murder of a gay Singaporean professor after 13 years on the run.

Lee Chez Kee, 36, who appeared at a special sitting of the Subordinate Courts, had been avoiding police since the murder of National University of Singapore (NUS) don Lee Kok Cheong between Dec 12 and 14, 1993.

Associate Professor Mr Cheong, 54, former head of the English Language Proficiency Unit at NUS, was found strangled and stabbed to death at his home in December 1993. The Straits Times in Singapore reported that he was found with his face covered by a pillow and his legs and hands bound with a belt and telephone wire.

Mr Kee was allegedly part of a trio who fled the scene after their robbery attempt ended in the professor's murder at his two-storey semi-detached house. The other two, Too Yin Seong, 22, and Ng Chek Siong, 35, were subsequently caught and have been dealt with by the law.

Magistrate Amy Tung ordered that he be remanded for further investigations and his case be brought up again later in the week.
