Former Culture Club front man Boy George has slammed same-sex 'weddings', insisting marriage is outdated and has no place in modern or gay culture.

The singer, who wrote hit song Karma Chameleon, ridiculed Elton John and David Furnish's decision to have a civil ceremony on December 21 last year - the first day British laws permitted the unions.

He predicted many gay 'marriages' are destined for the divorce courts. He told the Evening Standard: "Gay unions, what is that all about? I haven't been invited to any ceremonies and I wouldn't go anyway. The idea that gay people have to mimic what obviously doesn't work for straight people anymore, I think is a bit tragic."

"I'm looking forward to gay divorces."

The Eighties star, currently facing drugs charges in New York, meanwhile praised gay cowboy movie Brokeback Mountain, for bravely focusing on intimacy between two males. He said contemporary society continues to view gay relationships as purely sexual and sordid, and was amazed by Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger's performances.

"We live in a culture that pretends to accept and understand, but which doesn't want to deal with the finer details of gay culture."

"Just because you have a few queers in Emmerdale, there is this myth that the world has become more tolerant. It doesn't understand us at all."
