Vermont takes first steps toward marriage equality
The Vermont Legislature may soon take up the issue of 'gay marriage', if the formation of a recent commission is any indication.
According to Associated Press reports, the ten-member commission was formed to decide whether the state should consider allowing same-sex couples to marry (civil unions were legalized in 2000).
Former state Representative Tom Little has been appointed by Vermont's House and Senate to lead the group, which met for the first time on Thursday.
The commission is expected to complete its study early next year and it is unlikely the Legislature will act on its findings until 2009.
