What I will say is that women writers DO make far the best crime/murder/thriller authors. Nothing better than a good read with a well thought-out storyline and plenty of blood and guts along the way. Only ever tried one of Mr. Rankin's books and found it far too heavy-going to the point of boredom, and I finished it, but at least it didn't go to waste as it ended up in my compost bin. The only female author I do find difficult to read is Patricia Cornwell. When it comes to Mr. Rankin associating good thriller/crime writing with lesbianism I can't quite see the connection, or even if it matters if I did. This is in support of Ms. McDermid, and not just because I am gay myself but because she writes far better books which are more entertaining than Mr. Rankin's own.Alan Warbrick, London.
