As a fully paid up member of the Tory party, I'd just like to ask, how anybody things the party is going to change by standing on the outside and criticising it?We are not a single party state, and if we were, I suspect that things would be even worse that they are under the current right-wing socialist government that we current suffer. If every homosexual in the land joins one main party because the other party does not represent our interests any changes within that party are going to be slow and tortuous.I am a member of an association where getting on for half of the active membership are gay, and out gay at that. I’m sure many if not most of the less active membership are not, however this has not stopped them selecting gay councillors and electing a gay Chair of the association. The Tories are in a joint coalition with the Lib Dems running a borough, which is extremely gay friendly, helped I admit in no small part by a strong gay representation from the Lib Dem side. I have never once experience any anti-gay sentiment or had any negative experiences as a result of being gay. I introduce my partner to old ladies with blue rinses (and some with slightly purplish ones) at the Christmas party at the golf club every year without a blink of an eye. I’m introduced to the partners of other homos there as well. The prospective parliamentary candidate we select to stand for the association at General Elections is gay friendly. He has to be, without the support of an association that we have ‘infiltrated’ so comprehensively, his campaign would not get off the ground. The ‘us and them’ mentally will only prevail as long as we permit it to do so. I suggest that if the Tory attitude to homosexuality that is portrayed in the press is the only thing that is stopping people joining the party, do us all a favour, join and challenge any attitudes that you don’t find acceptable.

personally I think it shows how out of date they are. The old tory values are out dated and do not exist any more.

Just goes to show that the two major parties are hypocritical and will say or do anything for political expediency to get elected. When all is said and done, homophobia is at the root of everything including their refusal to give us full marriage equality. They're a lot like the spineless hypocrites we have here in the U.S. both Democrats and Republicans alike with the exception of 3 well knowns in the Democratic party.Robert, ex-pat Brit.

Cameron's spin doctors can try and twist it but the bottom line is - Cameron looked at the Tory party at the height of its homophobic excesses and thought "I'd like to join that". Whereas in the 80s when gay rights was a sure-fire vote loser, the Lib Dems stood alone in Parliament against section 28 while Labour and the Tories were united in their determination to bring it in.'Nuff said.
