Die Hard star wades into gay slur controversy
Bruce Willis, who recently reprised his most famous role as cop John McLane for Die Hard 4.0, has defended shamed actor Isaiah Washington after he was sacked from Grey's Anatomy for calling former colleague, T.R. Knight, a "faggot."
Speaking in an interview with Time magazine Willis says, "I hate to think we live in a time when you can get fired from your job because of what you say."
"He didn't punch anyone. I think we'll think differently with hindsight."
Washington, who is currently in talks with American network NBC, had previously accused Knight of exploiting controversy over the incident, which happened on the set, in order to get a salary increase and enhance his role.
"Isaiah does stand by his statement that he thinks Knight should have been fired and not him," commented a spokesman.
"I did everything I said I would do. I offered to go to counselling, to do a public service announcement," Washington has added.
"I wanted everyone to know I was remorseful… I did everything they told me to do, including not saying anything, and then they didn't renew my contract. That's not fair."
Knight, who plays surgical intern Dr George O'Malley, released a statement toPeople magazine in October last year revealing that he is gay.
"I guess there have been a few questions about my sexuality, and I'd like to quiet any unnecessary rumours that may be out there," the statement read.
"While I prefer to keep my personal life private, I hope the fact that I'm gay isn't the most interesting part of me."
Die Hard 4.0 is released nationwide on the 4th July.
