PinkNews beats internet rival
New statistics show that gay news website PinkNews.co.uk receives 50 times more internet traffic than its rival, PinkPaper.com.
Figures from independent statistics provider Compete found that PinkNews.co.uk receives 370,000 visits from unique users per month, while PinkPaper.com receives 7,200.
Ben Summerskill, chief executive of Stonewall, believes that the figures are encouraging for the gay press. He said: "Congratulations to everyone at PinkNews on reaching 370,000 unique visitors a month.
"This does demonstrate that gay people have an interest in high quality, accurate and well-written news and that PinkNews itself is now an established part of the pink media landscape."
But PinkNews' success is dwarfed by social networking and news site Gaydar, who receive three times as much traffic as PinkNews, and 175 times as much as PinkPaper.
PinkNews founder Benjamin Cohen said: "We're pleased our traffic levels continues to go up. But it's important to see there is a real mix of of gay media, it's still a market dominated by social networking with sites like Gaydar."
PinkNews was named "best publication" at the Stonewall Awards 2006, beating heavyweight names such as The Guardian and Diva.
But The Pink Paper is the only title to still have a print version, which has a bulk distribution of 41,000 copies.
The figures, compiled by independent company Compete, are an estimate compiled by internet service provider reports and browser plug-ins.
