City Hall venue for trans dialogue

The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, said he is delighted to support the event at City Hall.

A public meeting next week aims to foster a frank dialogue between London's trans community and providers of gender identity services.

City Hall will be the venue for a public discussion on gender reassignment in London on Tuesday 1st May.

The event, funded by the Department of Health, will bring together representatives from the trans community with speakers from specialist commissioning and London's gender identity clinic.

Speakers will give brief presentations and then there will be an opportunity for discussion and questions from attendees.

Dr Justin Varney, executive member of the Gay Lesbian Association of Doctors and Dentists and member of the Department of Health Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Advisory Group, will chair the panel.

"It is a fantastic first step in a frank and constructive dialogue between the trans community in London and the NHS," said Dr Varney.

"We all accept that there is some way to go in improving services, but this is a start and we could not have asked for more proactive support from both the Greater London Authority and the Department of Health."

The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, said he is delighted to support the event at City Hall.

"It will provide an opportunity for health professionals to explore and understand the diverse, and sometimes complex, health issues faced by the trans community and the discrimination many trans people experience when accessing health services," he said.

"This event will also inform the development of my new health inequalities strategy for the capital."

The event starts at 18:30 at City Hall on Tuesday 1st May.
