The London Borough of Barnet will celebrate LGBT History Month next week with an exhibition at the Church Farmhouse Museum in Hendon.

1967 and All That will showcase press items about gay and lesbian issues from the past forty years.

Robert Thompson, chair of the Lesbian and Gay Newsmedia Archives, which has loaned its extensive collection for the exhibition, commented, "The Wolfenden Committee recommended that male homosexuality be decriminalised ten years previously, in 1957.

"1967 and All That shows how the press did not simply report on the progress of the Wolfenden recommendations, it actually helped to shape the debate."

The event has been organised by volunteers from the Barnet LGBT Network, whose members represent a variety of organisations within the borough.

LGBT History Month is a countrywide celebration of the lives and experiences of gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual people. Councils across Britain have organised a range of events.

Councillor Brian Coleman, Cabinet Member for Community Engagement and Community Safety, said, "Gay men and women play an important role in community life in Barnet and this exhibition recognises the progress in equality issues over the last 40 years."

The exhibition at the Church Farmhouse Museum in Hendon, north London, is open to the public from 3 February until 18 March 2007. Entry is free.
