The important contribution that LGBT Bristolians make to the city's economy and cultural scene is to be celebrated through a range of events.

They will take place under the banner of LGBT History Month, and begin with a film double bill at the Arnolfini cinema on Saturday 29th January.

There are two further LGBT film double bills at the Arnolfini on Sundays 4th and 11th of February.

On Thursday 1st February there is a talk on sexuality in theatrical roles in the late 20th century by Andrew Wyllie and Pamela Karantonis from the University of West of England (UWE).

This takes place at Bristol University's Wickham Theatre on Cantocks Close, off Park Row.

On Thursday 8th February, Bristol Record Office highlights the city's archive of historical material about prosecutions for sodomy in the 18th and 19th centuries with a talk by Dr Steve Poole, also from UWE.

The LGBT Speakeasy on Tuesday, 20th February sees the Council House on College Green hosting a 'Question Time' style debate, discussing the different lives and experiences within the LGBT community.

Panellists include Peter Tatchell of OutRage! and Linda Bellos, co-founder of the Black History Month.

The Paintworks off Bath Road, Brislington, will stage an LGBT arts exhibition from Wednesday, 20th to Wednesday, 28th February.

The show includes work by artists using various mediums including installations, paintings and photography.

The Cube Microplex join in with the celebrations when the Ministry of Love present 'Love Science' on Saturday 24th February - a night of performance art, music and silliness.

Cllr Barbara Janke, Leader of Bristol City Council, spoke to PinkNews.co.uk about her pride in the event.

"This month of events offers an opportunity for people, no matter what their own sexuality, to celebrate, discuss and re-examine the contribution made by lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender people.

"By taking a second look at the past we can turn negative stereotypes around, recognise the positive impact that this section of our community makes and appreciate the full diversity that exists within our city.

"Bristol City Council is very pleased to see such an exciting and creative celebration of an important part of our community"
