The Welsh village made famous by the Little Britain gay caricature Daffyd Thomas is to be given conservation status.

Ceredigion county council revealed yesterday that Llanddewi Brefi had been chosen because of its new-found fame.

The council said the conservation statue will help maintain the village's character but also admitted that they are keen to encourage tourists to come to the area.

"Llanddewi Brefi is steeped in history and is now also famous because of Little Britain.

"The village has the potential to become one of the real jewels in our tourism crown," council planning officer Rosemary Rhys told news site icWales.co.uk

The Little Britain village is called Llanddewi Breffi, though the extra 'f' does not affect the pronunciation.

Last summer the real village was targeted by thieving fans stealing the town's signs and thousands of people now visit every year.

The conservation order entails planning restrictions in the designated area that are designed to protect the village buildings and maintain its character.

Llanddewi Brefi was founded in 6AD, and in the sixty century St David, the patron saint of Wales, held a synod in the village.
