A Swedish court has rejected two separate applications from lesbians who want to adopt their partner's child.

In both cases, the women were inseminated in Denmark where sperm donors are anonymous, but the Swedish judge has ruled that the child has the right to find out who their biological parents are.

He claims that allowing this would undermine this right, despite legal precedents allowing lesbian adoption in the past.

Judge Mats Orstadius said: "It is not acceptable to use the institution of adoption to in this way circumvent such a basic right of the child. The benefits that the child might gain from the adoption still do not warrant its approval."

The couples were shocked at the ruling.

Cecilia, who wishes to adopt the daughter of her registered partner, told English language Swedish newspaper The Local: "There is no father, only a donor. That's why I'm trying to adopt.

"The court should think of what's best for the child. And what's best for the child is to have two parents."

She is now planning to appeal the ruling.
