Mexico may back gay unions

Mexico's northern state of Coahuila along with the capital, Mexico City, is considering a civil unions law for same sex couples

One of the world's biggest Catholic nation's looks set to introduce gay partnership laws, according to reports.

Mexico's northern state of Coahuila along with the capital, Mexico City, is considering a civil unions law for same sex couples.

Mexican gay campaigner, Rocio Sanchez, called it a step towards equality.

He told Reuters: "The fight won't end here. It is a first step to finally achieving equal rights. But we knew that in Mexico it wasn't

possible to go right for marriage."

The law would bring pension, property and inheritance rights to gay couples, but will not allow adoption.

Catholic groups in the country have expressed the usual opposition, accusing the country's leaders of sneaking the law through to avoid debate.
