New York amends trans laws
New York trans people will have their birth certificated amended to represent their true sex regardless of whether they have completed gender reassignment, new proposals in the city have revealed.
The initiative is being headed by New York City's Board of Health and would require support from a doctor and a mental health processional and a history of two years of living as the desired gender.
Previously a birth certificate could only be changed after surgery, but now transgender activists say the new law will help cut out the expensive costs of surgery which some people often feel is unnecessary.
It will also allay fears from some activists that the medical profession could be biased against them, The New York Times reports.
The issue will be voted on by the Department of Helath and Mental Hygiene next month.
