A woman has accused a transgender psychiatrist of being “too nice” in encouraging her to undergo gender reassignment.

The patient, told a General Medical Council (GMC) hearing in London, that she regretted the change and is now restricted from having a relationship after Dr Russell Reid allegedly diagnosed that she had gender identity disorder too early.

The GMC is currently hearing accusations that Dr Russell Reid behaved inappropriately towards five transgender patients by recommending sex change treatments too quickly between 1984 and 2003.

Patient B claims she was rushed into treatment after going through a bad time which included a divorce and a death in the family, The Evening Standard reports.

Dr Reid denies the charge of misconduct. He claims to have given full consideration to the industry guidelines as part of a thorough assessment of each patient’s needs, but that inflexible guidelines were not in the best interest of some patients.

The GMC disciplinary hearing continues.
