A Polish submission has been chosen as the logo for the European Union's 50th anniversary.

Szymon Skrzypczak's design was chosen by a panel including gay designer Tony Malone, out of over a thousand applicants.

The year 2007 marks the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. Signed on 25th March 1957, the treaty laid the foundations for today's peaceful and prosperous European Union.

To celebrate the event, a competition to create the official EU birthday logo was launched by the European Commission, the European Parliament, the European Council, the European Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions.

Mr Skrzypczak aimed to symbolise political union by using different typefaces and letters from a variety of European languages to spell out the word "together."

The awards were presented by European Commission Vice-President Margot Wallström and Vice-President of the European Parliament Alejo Vidal-Quadras, who have been co-chairing the final jury.

Mr Vidal-Quadras said the competition displayed the talent amongst young people in Europe, "The success of this logo competition throughout Europe demonstrates that we were right to put our confidence in young people to help us design the Europe of tomorrow.

"On behalf of the European Parliament, the institution who represents the European citizens, I would like to thank all the participants for their imagination and enthusiasm. I congratulate the winner for the very nice result, which expresses very well our common destiny."
