A major new report into housing needs of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people in Wales has revealed a shocking link between the gay housing crisis and homophobic harassment.

The study, carried out by Stonewall Cymru and Triangle Wales, found that a major cause of housing problems for LGB people is arson, burglary, graffiti and physical assault.

Youths are identified as a main source of homophobic harassment and intimidation and a significant contributory cause of housing problems for LGB people.

"While we had anecdotal evidence of homophobic attacks and harassment from the calls to the Triangle Wales housing and support helpline, it still comes as a shock when you see the research findings," said Jacqui Jablaoui, Projects Manager, Triangle Wales.

The report also highlighted that very few local authorities and housing providers understand the specific needs of LGB people or had guidance for their staff on how to deal with sexual orientation issues. Stonewall Cymru is responding to the report by calling for all housing providers to demonstrate zero tolerance to homophobia.

"It is vital that local authorities and housing providers understand the specific housing needs of lesbian, gay and bisexual people", said Matthew Batten, Stonewall Cymru's Policy and Public Affairs Officer.

"We are calling for comprehensive policies and procedures that address the needs of LGB people in Wales.'
