A national parenting support charity is to open lesbian only ante-natal classes for Bradford mums-to-be.

The initiative, led by Sarah Williams, a National Childbirth Trust (NCT) ante-natal teacher is a first in this country and may soon reach the rest of the UK.

The two day programme helps prepare expectant mothers for all aspects of parenthood including late pregnancy, birth and early motherhood.

Organisers of the programme in Bradford hope the lesbian only classes will help focus on specific issues such as support networks, homophobia and involvement of the father.

Ms Williams told PinkNews.co.uk: "It is in the early stages and we are testing the demand in the North.

"It is obvious that lesbians would like the opportunity to meet together and have the experience of childbirth where they do not have to worry about coming out."

An NCT spokesperson told : "There could be more classes in time."
