Important to note there are a couple of issues about civil unions/ gay marriage in Ireland at the moment. One case coming before the courts (Zappone and Gilligan) is about the recognition of a Canadian same-sex marriage). The other issue is a Civil Partnership Bill (introduced in 2005 by Senator David Norris, who led the legal challenge to the criminalisation of homosexuality). His Bill is in 'abeyance' while discussions are held about this policy (i.e. while the current government stalls on the issue). If the law case fails, there may be a fallback to the Civil partnership position.
