The Beatles have been named as a shock entry in the top 50 gay albums of all time.

The list, complied by gay magazine Attitude, puts the Fab Four at number 30 for their 1963 album Please Please Me.

The record was the band's first LP and contains hits such as Twist and Shout and I Saw Her Standing There.

Simon Napier-Bell former manager of WHAM! said in the magazine: "That summer it was the gay album. Every party, every club, everywhere you went, Please Please Me blasted out. George and Paul singing into one microphone, their cheeks touching, was the gayest thing we'd ever seen."

Attitude called it "the beginning of a modern gay era."

US band the Scissor Sisters came top of the list with their debut CD ahead of ABBA's Arrival and Morrisey's Vauxhall. Other names in the poll included George Michael and Kylie Minogue.
